Russia’s Zapad (West) Group of Forces has taken control of the village of Novolubovka (also known as Novolyubivka) in the Luhansk People's Republic, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Saturday.
"As a result of decisive actions of the units of the Zapad group of forces, the settlement of Novolubovka in the Luhansk People's Republic was liberated," the ministry stated.
According to the ministry, Ukrainian forces suffered significant losses in personnel and equipment across four mechanized brigades, an assault brigade, and a National Guard brigade in various locations, including the Kharkov region, the Donetsk People's Republic, and the Serebryanskyy forest area.
"The enemy's losses amounted to more than 200 servicemen, a tank, a US-made M113 armored personnel carrier, five vehicles and five field artillery guns, three of them produced by NATO countries. Three electronic warfare stations and an ammunition depot were destroyed," the statement added.
Additionally, the Russian Defense Ministry mentioned that Ukraine lost more than 375 fighters in clashes with Russia’s Tsentr (Center) battle group over the past day, in addition to personnel and equipment losses in other combat zones.
"The enemy lost more than 375 military servicepeople, four combat armored vehicles, including a US-made MaxxPro, five cars and seven field artillery weapons, including a US-made 155mm Paladin self-propelled artillery unit," the ministry said in an update.
These losses come on top of over 220 Ukrainian fighters eliminated by Russia’s Yug (South) battle group, 200 by the Zapad (West) battle group, 160 by the Vostok (East) battle group, 85 by the Dnepr battle group, and 40 by the Sever (North) battle group, the statement noted.
Russian Chief of Staff visits troops east of Ukraine
In a related development, Russia’s Chief of the General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, visited troops engaged in combat east of Ukraine as Russian forces continued their advances in the region.
"General Valery Gerasimov ... visited a command post" in the Donetsk region, the Russian Defense Ministry confirmed in a statement.
Russian forces are currently pushing to capture Chasiv Yar and Pokrovsk, two key frontline strongholds held by the Ukrainian military.
Ukraine retains control over only a handful of localities in Luhansk, a region Russia integrated into its federation in 2022 following the start of the war with Ukraine.
Gerasimov’s visit to the front lines comes amid renewed diplomatic engagement between Washington and Moscow, aimed at accelerating an end to a conflict that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
