Strengthening relations with neighboring countries remains a fundamental principle of Iran’s foreign policy, the leader of the Islamic Revolution and the Islamic Republic of Iran, Sayyed Ali Khamenei told Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
During a meeting on Wednesday with Sheikh Tamim and his accompanying delegation in Tehran, Sayyed Khamenei emphasized that Iran views Qatar as a friendly and brotherly nation.
However, he noted that certain unresolved issues persist, particularly regarding the return of Iranian financial assets transferred from South Korea to Qatar, attributing the primary obstacle in implementing the agreement on this matter to US interference.
"If I were you, I would ignore American pressure and return the other side's money. We continue to expect such action from Qatar. There's no difference between US presidents whatsoever," the Iranian leader told the Qatari Emir.
On his part, Sheikh Tamim praised Iran’s steadfast support for Palestine, asserting that "Iran’s resilience in support for Palestine will never be forgotten."
He also announced a significant infrastructure project between the two countries, stating that Iran and Qatar have agreed to construct an underwater tunnel linking them.
Additionally, he confirmed that the joint commission between the two nations will soon be reactivated and that economic exchanges are set to increase in the near future.
Pezeshkian, Sheikh Tamim emphasize strengthening trade relations
In the same context, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Sheikh Tamim held a joint press conference in Tehran on Wednesday, where they underscored their commitment to expanding bilateral trade ties.
Pezeshkian highlighted Qatar’s special status in Iran’s foreign policy and stated that new avenues for cooperation had been explored during his meeting with the Qatari Emir ahead of the press conference.
He further emphasized Iran’s efforts to enhance regional collaboration.
On international matters, Pezeshkian reiterated Iran’s respect for Syria’s sovereignty, asserting that the Syrian people must determine their own future.
The Iranian President also urged Muslim nations to take new steps in support of Palestinians, particularly in Gaza, emphasizing their right to a safe and secure life in their ancestral land.
Sheikh Tamim, for his part, called for strengthened regional consultation and coordination, particularly during times of tension. He advocated for constructive dialogue among neighboring countries and expressed support for agreements that promote regional prosperity.
The Qatari Emir also stressed the need for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the guaranteed delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians.
Elsewhere, he reaffirmed his country’s commitment to expanding economic ties with Iran.
