Thousands partake in a funeral ceremony in Daraa's Nawa, Syria, on April 3, 2025 (SANA)

Thousands of mourners gathered on Thursday in the city of Nawa, in southern Syria’s Daraa countryside, to lay to rest those killed during Israeli airstrikes and confrontations a day earlier.

A large crowd performed funeral prayers at the Rural Development Center in Nawa before the martyrs were taken to their final resting place in the Martyrs’ Cemetery.

During the funeral procession, mourners carried pictures of the martyrs and national flags while chanting slogans condemning Israeli aggression and vowing to continue resistance until every inch of Syrian land is liberated. Chants of "With our souls, with our blood, we sacrifice for you, O Aqsa" echoed throughout the gathering.

According to Dr. Ziad Mahamid, the director of Daraa’s health department, the Israeli attack on the Jubailiyah Dam forest area claimed the lives of nine people and injured 23 others, with two critically wounded individuals transferred to Damascus for treatment.

Reports indicated that the entire Israeli force that had been stationed near the Tsil National Reserve withdrew toward the Tel Ahmar Gharbi base and into the occupied Palestinian territory.

Additionally, civil defense teams were dispatched to the area where the confrontation took place to recover more bodies near the national reserve.

"بالروح بالدم نفديك يا أقصى".

Aggression on Daraa

Israeli attacks on Daraa on Wednesday resulted in nearly 20 casualties, including both dead and wounded, while Israeli helicopters were reported flying intensively over the area.

The Israeli military acknowledged facing resistance during its operations in Syria, with a spokesperson stating that "the army encountered some saboteurs."

An Israeli media platform reported "unusual events" near the Syrian border, citing clashes between Israeli forces and what it called "Syrian saboteurs." The report suggested that Israeli troops may have fallen into an ambush in Daraa but did not provide details on casualties or losses among Israeli forces.

Coinciding with this escalation, local sources reported an Israeli incursion with a number of armored vehicles into the Jabaliya Dam forest in the western Daraa countryside. Israeli artillery has also renewed its shelling on the surrounding areas of Tal Jumu, located between the town of Nawa and the village of Tsil in the western Daraa countryside.

In the early hours of Thursday, an attempted Israeli advance near the city of Nawa in Daraa governorate was met with armed resistance from locals, who took up arms to repel the expanding Israeli incursion into Syrian territory.

According to our local sources, mosques in Nawa called for a general mobilization to confront the intensified Israeli incursion into Nawa and Jasem. Meanwhile, Israeli helicopters heavily patrolled the area's airspace.

Syria condemns latest Israeli aggression

Later, the Syrian Foreign Ministry released a statement condemning the Israeli aggression that targeted the Hama Air Base.

It said that the bombardment led to the "near-complete destruction" of the base, adding that it resulted in dozens of military and civilian casualties.

Damascus said that the aggression violated both "international law and the sovereignty of the Syrian Arab Republic."

The Israeli assault is part of a broader pattern of attacks on military sites since the ousting of longtime President Bashar al-Assad by Islamist-led factions.

"Israel" has stationed troops along the Golan Heights buffer zone, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for the demilitarization of southern Syria, near the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan.
