Truss: UK, US not seeking government change in Russia
UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss opposes Emmanuel Macron's proposal that Russia be given a way out of the Ukrainian crisis.
UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said the UK and the US were not pursuing any government change in Russia.
During an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Truzz voiced her opposition to French President Emmanuel Macron's proposal that Russia be given a way out of the Ukrainian crisis.
Truss commented on the ongoing war in Ukraine by saying that the UK aims to ensure Russian military defeat in the country and restore Ukraine’s territorial integrity, including control over Crimea and Donbass.
Elsewhere in her remarks, Truss claimed that the West must guarantee that Russia is incapable of "committing acts of aggression in the future."
On Thursday, the UK government announced new sanctions against the Russian airline industry. Aeroflot, Russia's largest airline, Ural Airlines, and Rossiya Airlines will now be unable to sell their unused, lucrative landing slots at UK airports.
Thursday's announcement is the latest round of UK sanctions aimed at Russia after Moscow was previously barred from using UK airspace and waters, as well as from exporting aviation goods and technology.
However, Russia has managed to stabilize key aspects of the economy, most notably the value of its national currency with strict controls.
