Ukraine announces more hefty weapons shipment to be expected from US
Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov announced that Ukraine will be awaiting another multimillion dollar weapons shipment from the US.
On Saturday, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said that Ukraine has been awaiting another millions-of-dollars-worth shipment of rounds for US-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).
After a meeting at the US air base in Ramstein, Germany, Reznikov said that "The Ukrainian delegation has wrapped up a very eventful and fruitful visit to the Fifth Ukraine Defense Contact Group … An additional $675 million aid package was announced at the meeting. It includes crucial HIMARS ammo."
HIMARS is capable of launching Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) missiles with a range of up to 50 miles as well as a single Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missile with a range of 186 miles. The US has been continuesly supplying Ukraine with GMLRSs, while Kiev continues to make demands for ATACMS delivery.
US aide to Ukraine
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced, on September 8, that US President Joe Biden had approved an extra $675 million weapons package for Ukraine.
At the beginning of a conference of several defense ministers at the US air base of Ramstein in Germany, Austin said that the group will talk about how nations may cooperate to train the Ukrainian military and strengthen their capabilities.
Austin argued at the US base that "This contact group needs to position itself to sustain Ukraine's brave defenders for the long haul," adding "That means a continued and determined flow of capability now."
Earlier, on August 24, US President Joe Biden said, in a statement, that the instated $2.98 billion military assistance will allow Ukraine to acquire air defense systems, artillery systems, munitions, drones, and other equipment “to ensure it can continue to defend itself over the long term.”
This package brings the US military assistance to Kiev since the start of the war in Ukraine to almost $13.5 billion in total.
