A former civilian employee of the US Air Force was sentenced to nearly six years in prison for sharing classified information on an online dating platform on Wednesday.
David Slater, a 64-year-old retired US Army lieutenant colonel, who had pleaded guilty in July to transmitting secret information on the platform to someone he believed was a woman living in Ukraine.
At the time of his offense, Slater was working as a civilian employee assigned to the US Strategic Command in Nebraska, which has a portfolio that includes the mission of nuclear deterrence. According to the Justice Department, the documents, some of which were classified as "top secret," concerned the war in Ukraine and included information about military targets and Russian military capabilities.
On Wednesday, a federal judge in Nebraska sentenced Slater to 70 months in prison and imposed a $25,000 fine.
