Iran loses to US after Qatar was disqualified by the Netherlands
The host of the World Cup is now only a spectator as the Netherlands beats Qatar before Iran was sent home at the hands of the United States.
Qatar was disqualified from the World Cup it is hosting on Tuesday by the Netherlands, completing a losing World Cup campaign with a 0-2 loss against the Dutch, marking the worst performance ever by a host nation.
Notably, Qatar's national team is the reigning continental champions after the Maroons won the Asian Cup three years ago.
Cody Gakpo scored his third goal of the World Cup, marking an end to the Qatari campaign in the world cup as the Netherlands advance to the last 16 as Group A winners.
Gakpo struck for the third game in a row, giving the Dutch supremacy in the first half at Al Bayt Stadium before Frenkie de Jong added a second shortly after half-time.
Senegal makes it to last 16
Senegal qualified for the knockout stages of the World Cup after winning 2-1 against Ecuador, sending their Ecuadorian ways packing home after they were disqualified from the World Cup.
Senegal leapfrogged Ecuador into second place and a spot in the last 16 thanks to Ismaila Sarr and Kalidou Koulibaly scoring the winning goals for their team.
USA sends Iran out of World Cup
One of the most anticipated World Cup matches, Iran Vs. the United States, ended with an American victory against the Iranian team with a 1-0 lead for the Yanks.
Christian Pulisic carried the United States into the last 16 of the World Cup as the Americans downed Iran.
Chelsea star Pulisic sent his team into the second spot of Group B at 38', setting the stage for a second-round clash with Group A winners the Netherlands on the weekend.
Pulisic left the field at half-time after sustaining a heavy knock while scoring his match-winning goal.
England sends Wales down the standings
England will be facing Group A second-place holders Senegal in the last 16 of the World Cup after The Three Lions beat their compatriots 3-0, ratifying their place as the leading Group B team.
Marcus Rashford's brace and another strike from Phil Foden gave England a comfortable win, which brought an abrupt end to Wales' first World Cup campaign since 1958 at the group stage.
Rashford was one of four changes made by Gareth Southgate from that match and said the squad was keen to make amends for a lackluster performance.
England is the World Cup's top scorer with nine goals, despite ending their game against the United States with a negative tie earlier on.
Rashford had not featured for England since the Euro 2020 final before being included in Southgate's squad for Qatar after his form dipped drastically for Manchester United.
