Three upcoming 'Star Wars' films to include one directed by a woman
Studio executives reveal that Pakistani director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be directing one of the new Star Wars films.
Three new Star Wars films are in the works, including the first in the cinematic universe to be directed by a woman, studio executives revealed on Friday.
Pakistani Director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, the two-time Oscar winner for documentaries denouncing violence against women, is moving from Marvel's world to the Star Wars universe to direct a new movie set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker -- the last film in the third Star Wars trilogy.
She will direct British actress Daisy Ridley as she reprises her role of Rey, the heroine of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, which stirred strong opinions among fans in 2019.
The new film will "tell the story of rebuilding the New Jedi Order and the powers that rise to tear it down".

Obaid-Chinoy said she was "drawn to the hero's journey" in the Star Wars world, adding that she spent the better part of her life "meeting real heroes who are overcoming oppressive regimes and battling impossible odds and I think that's the heart of Star Wars."
She directed Ms. Marvel television miniseries, which premiered on June 8, 2022.
President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy, said each of the new upcoming films would cover different periods in the Star Wars narrative, and each will have a different director.
James Mangold will helm one of the films, right after taking the reins of the final outing in the Indiana Jones series, which will be premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this May 18.
His film will explore the origins of the Jedi order, thousands of years before the original storyline.
Dave Filoni, the producer of several television series, including The Mandalorian, will direct the third film.
It is worth noting that Ridley’s return faced some criticism and Star Wars fans asked Lucasfilm to bring John Boyega back.
The fans expressed interest in Boyega’s character, Finn, instead.
I know he probably won't come back but it would be cool if John Boyega came back to finally be the Jedi he should have been in the sequel trilogy. pic.twitter.com/FBOlgHviY0

Fans will have to wait until 2025 for the release of the first of the three films.
