At least 5 dead, 19 injured following 2 earthquakes south Iran
The Hormozgan governor in Iran says that 6.1 and 6.3 earthquakes killed five people and injured 19 others, and rescue teams have been dispatched to the area.
At least five people were killed and 19 others were injured when a strong earthquake shook southern Iran early Saturday, the state news agency IRNA reported.
The Seismological Center of the Geophysics Institute of the University of Tehran highlighted that a 6.3-magnitude earthquake followed a 6.1 quake that hit the village of Sayeh Khosh of Bandar Khamir village in southern Iran.
Hormozgan governor Mahdi Dosti said the quakes killed five people and injured 19 others, IRNA reported, adding that rescue teams have been sent to the area.
Dosti indicated that most of the damage occurred in the village of Sayeh Khost, close to the epicenter.
It is noteworthy that one person was killed in November last year when Hormozgan province was hit by 6.4 and 6.3 magnitude quakes.
Situated on the edge of several tectonic plates and crossing various fault lines, Iran is an area of strong seismic activity.
Iran's deadliest quake was a 7.4-magnitude tremor that struck in 1990, killing 40,000 people in the north of the country.
