Approximately 600 senior Israeli officials and diplomats, including former heads of the Mossad and Shin Bet, have formally appealed to US President Donald Trump to intervene and pressure the Israeli government into halting its war on Gaza, per the Israeli daily Maariv.
Earlier in August, ex-top IOF security officials also sent a letter to Trump urging him to end the war on Gaza. The signatories are part of the Commanders for Israel's Security (CIS) group, the largest such association of former high-ranking Israeli military and intelligence figures.
In a letter addressed to Trump, they wrote: "Stop the Gaza War! On behalf of CIS, Israel's largest group of former IOF generals and Mossad, Shin Bet, Police, and Diplomatic Corps equivalents, we urge you to end the Gaza war. You did it in Lebanon. Time to do it in Gaza as well."
Continued resistance operations across Gaza
Despite months of intense bombardment and ground offensives, Palestinian resistance factions have intensified their operations. The al-Qassam Brigades recently launched coordinated attacks with the al-Quds Brigades on Israeli positions near Khan Younis and along the Salah al-Din axis.
Operations have spanned various fronts, including fatal ambushes of Israeli troops and the downing of reconnaissance drones. These developments reflect what Israeli analysts describe as increasingly bold and coordinated resistance tactics.
Mounting Israeli military failures
An internal assessment by the Israeli Ground Forces has acknowledged the failure of the "Gideon’s Chariots" operation conducted in mid-May. As per a Channel 12 report, the document concluded that the operation failed to meet its strategic goals, particularly in neutralizing Hamas and recovering Israeli captives. The operation was said to have contradicted the army's own doctrine and was marked by poor execution.
Additionally, reports from various Israeli outlets have pointed to systemic issues within the military, describing the ground offensive in Gaza as a "collapse." Despite the Air Force's activity, ground forces reportedly suffered from planning flaws and a lack of coordination, resulting in a costly stalemate with no significant territorial or strategic gains.
As of August 2025, Yedioth Ahronoth reported that the death toll among Israeli soldiers since the war began on October 7, 2023, had reached 900.
