A drone attack has forced the suspension of oil production at the Sarsang oilfield in the Dohuk region of Iraqi Kurdistan, the region’s Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed on Tuesday.
According to two engineers at the site, the halt in production was a precautionary measure following an explosion caused by what the ministry described as a “terrorist attack” using drones; however, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack until this moment.
Heavy smoke was seen rising from the field following the strike. The operator of the field, HKN Energy, confirmed that production was paused as emergency crews worked to extinguish the resulting fire. In a later statement, the company stated that emergency response teams had successfully contained the damage.
Both HKN Energy and the ministry reported that there were no casualties, while a full investigation is underway, and damage assessments are ongoing, though no further details have been released about the extent or cause of the explosion.
This incident follows another drone attack late on Monday night, when two drones struck the Khurmala oilfield near Erbil, damaging infrastructure, including water pipelines at the site.
