Gaddafi's Son Back in Presidential Race
A Libyan court accepts the appeal submitted by Seif al-Islam Gaddafi and returns him to the electoral race.
A Libyan court on Thursday reinstated Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of late Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi, as a candidate in next month's presidential elections, according to local media outlets.
The electoral commission last month rejected Gaddafi's son application, referring to articles of the electoral law.
Simultaneously, Seif al-Islam had lodged an appeal in the southern city of Sebha. On Thursday, the court ruled in his favor.
Videos on social media showed scenes of celebrations organized by a number of supporters in front of the court building, expressing their joy at his return to the list of candidates for the upcoming elections.
The presidential elections in Libya are scheduled to be held in two rounds, the first starting on December 24, and the second starting with the parliamentary elections 52 days after the first round.
Seif al-Islam has not been seen since June 2014 until one of his most recent interviews, where he spoke to The New York Times, saying that he wanted to "restore the lost unity" in Libya.
