The head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization, Mohammad Eslami, sent a message today, Thursday, to the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, stressing that the agency must condemn the Israeli aggression against peaceful nuclear facilities.
Eslami added in his message that the Israeli military aggression against the Arak reactor violates the Geneva Conventions, relevant protocols, and the IAEA’s statute
The letter also emphasized that the attack violates the standards set by the UN Scientific Committee on Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) and the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Eslami continued, "Today, Israel launched a direct military strike against the Arak heavy water research reactor, a facility under full monitoring and verification by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."
He further noted that "Israel" had also carried out armed attacks on a uranium conversion facility, a nuclear fuel plate production plant, and centrifuge manufacturing sites in Tehran and Karaj, all of which fall under the IAEA’s oversight and inspection protocols.
The letter emphasized that this aggression represents an unprecedented and grave assault on the integrity of the global nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and the multilateral safeguards system overseen by the IAEA.
US involvement could shake the foundations of the NPT
Regarding potential direct US involvement in the Israeli aggressions, Eslami expressed grave concern over credible reports indicating that the United States, the depository state of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), is considering supporting "Israel’s" ongoing aggression. He warned that such a move would not only constitute a serious violation of the NPT but also set a dangerous and irreversible precedent, undermining the very foundations of the global non-proliferation coalition.
Eslami added, "We will take necessary measures to defend our rights and pursue appropriate legal action, particularly regarding Your Excellency's inaction."
The letter warned that "the IAEA’s continued silence and inaction, in violation of its obligations under its founding statute and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, would render it complicit by omission in these unprecedented and unlawful acts of aggression."
The Islamic Republic urged the UN Security Council and Secretary-General to adopt a clear and principled stance by condemning "Israel’s" unlawful strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, which operate under IAEA safeguards, while also calling for an immediate halt to all such attacks and reaffirming the inviolability of safeguarded nuclear sites in line with international law, the UN Charter, the IAEA’s statute, and resolutions of the Agency’s General Conference.
