JCPOA at the forefront of Western needs amid Ukrainian war: Marandi
Iranian advisor to the nuclear negotiations highlights the importance of the new JCPOA for the US and EU amid an escalating crisis in Ukraine.
Advisor to the Iranian negotiating team Mohammad Marandi told Sputnik that the United States and European countries are in need of a new Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) deal with Iran as they are under excessive pressure due to the crisis they created in Ukraine.
"Americans and Europeans are under a lot of pressure due to the wars they have had and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as due to the crisis in Ukraine, which they themselves created, so the Americans need an agreement," Marandi said.

The advisor continued to say that while Western nations want to reach a deal, doing so will require them to adhere to Iran's reasonable conditions and demands.
Marandi pointed out that the US has modified its stance on negotiations with Iran to extend the JCPOA. The American side's assurances to Iran that it will fulfill its duties under the new agreement and the easing of US sanctions against Tehran were topics of discussion during the most recent negotiations in Doha.

From July 13 to July 16, US President Joe Biden will visit West Asia, according to a senior US government official.
As per Marandi, US President Joe Biden’s visit to West Asia is unrelated to the JCPOA resumption negotiations in Qatar. Marandi further clarified that "these Iranian negotiations have their own framework, and, naturally, Iran is looking for specific guarantees and wants to achieve the lifting of sanctions in order to fulfill the JCPOA." Moreover, the Iranian negotiator noted that the media has given Biden’s visit to the region a greater value, with regard to the nuclear negotiations, than it actually has potential for.

Last week, on July 2, Marandi added, in a press interview, that Iran demanded throughout the negotiations that took place in Vienna to be granted tangible guarantees, rejecting the Western rhetoric that these guarantees go beyond the nuclear agreement.
Marandi explained that the Americans and Europeans were forced to gradually accept the Iranian demands, explaining that the tangible guarantees that Iran is now demanding are meant for the continuation of the nuclear agreement and do not fall outside the scope of the agreement.
