On the night of September 12–13, the Lebanese Navy intercepted the Hawk III, a tanker sailing under a Panamanian flag, as it attempted to exit Lebanese territorial waters without authorization. The operation was initiated after the Navy's Joint Operations Center received intelligence regarding the vessel’s movements. Judicial authorities promptly issued directives for interception.
According to a statement from the Lebanese Army, a naval patrol was dispatched to halt the tanker. When the crew ignored repeated instructions to stop, the patrol fired warning shots into the air. Despite these warnings, the vessel continued its course, necessitating a tactical escalation.
Marine Commandos board Hawk III
A Marine Commandos unit, supported by the Lebanese Air Force, carried out an amphibious assault on the Hawk III approximately 30 nautical miles off the Lebanese coast. The special operation led to the successful detention of 22 individuals on board.
The Lebanese Army emphasized that the ship was attempting to leave Lebanese waters illegally, despite prior impoundment by Lebanese Customs under judicial orders. The military operation was conducted in close coordination with judicial authorities to ensure procedural compliance.
Injuries, legal action follow confrontation
During the boarding, the vessel's captain tried to evade capture by maneuvering the ship, leading to a confrontation in which three Lebanese soldiers were injured. The Army confirmed that legal proceedings have been launched against the detainees and that judicial authorities will oversee the necessary actions regarding the tanker itself.
According to the Lebanese Army, the interception of the Hawk III highlights the Army’s continued commitment to upholding maritime law and protecting national sovereignty. Investigations are currently underway to determine the full scope of illegal activities associated with the attempted escape.
