Russia opens the northeastern front, launches military op. in Kharkiv
Russian forces have advanced past the Ukrainian border in the Kharkiv region.
Russian forces opened a new war front on Friday against Ukraine by beginning a military operation in the latter's Kharkiv region.
The situation is still unfolding with limited accurate information from the battleground. Most of the preliminary reports indicate that the Russians are advancing in the Kharkiv region.
The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said the attack began at 5:00 a.m. with Russian forces advancing one kilometer past the Ukrainian border near the Vovchansk region.
A senior Ukrainian official reported that Ukrainian forces were able to counter the attack, but that intense battles were still ongoing. Vitaliy Ganchev, a Russian-installed official in the Kharkiv region warned civilians residing near areas of operations against leaving shelters.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his troops had anticipated the attack, adding that Russia could send more forces.
Russian forces reportedly aim to push Ukrainian forces 10 kilometers back to create a buffer zone in Kharkiv to prevent Ukraine from shelling Russian territories.
Russia advances on all war fronts
Last week, Russia captured the village of Semenivka, located near Avdiivka, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on Monday.
Semenivka is located to the south of Novobakhmutivka near Ocheretyne, which was penetrated last week and where fighting intensified, leading up to yet another territorial gain for Russia.
This comes after Russian forces took control of the village of Novobakhmutivka in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) on Sunday, eliminating up to 380 Ukrainian servicepeople and one tank in the area.
Russian troops have been advancing further toward eastern Ukraine and western Donetsk since its win in Avdiivka and amid the worsening state of the Ukrainian frontlines.
