Cuba supports Algeria's efforts to stop war on Gaza
Ibrahim Boughali praised the distinguished relations between the two countries, and the common history of struggle for liberation and defense of human rights and just causes in the world.
The president of the Algerian National People's Assembly, Ibrahim Boughali met with the ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Algeria, Hector Igarza Cabrera on Tuesday.
The Cuban ambassador expressed his country supported Algeria's role and efforts to stop the Israeli occupation's aggression and massacres against the Palestinian people, or the efforts to "empower the Sahrawi people with their right to self-determination."
On his part, Boughali praised the distinguished relations between the two countries, and the common history of struggle for liberation and defense of human rights and just causes in the world while stressing the need to continue improving excellent political relations.
Commenting on the Cuban president's visit to Algeria on the occasion of the two countries' celebration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of relations, he explained that the visit represents an opportunity to develop bilateral cooperation in economy and commerce, pointing to the Cuban experience in the medical field in Algeria and stressing that it is "a model of which he is proud."
The Algerian parliament speaker welcomed the two parliamentary friendship groups between the two countries, and expressed his hope that they would “give a strong impetus to relations between the two legislative institutions through the exchange of experiences, expertise, and parliamentary delegations.”
Boughali affirmed his readiness to work to “strengthen channels of dialogue and consultation, and coordinate positions between Arab and African parliaments and their counterparts in Latin America.”
In turn, the Cuban ambassador stressed that "relations between the two countries are strong and rooted in history," and called for "consolidating economic cooperation and raising the volume of trade exchange by implementing joint cooperation projects in various fields."
Cabrera also stressed "the importance of parliamentary diplomacy," in addition to official diplomacy and heightened coordination between both nations on regional and international issues of common interest.
Cuba has always been a strong supporter of Palestinian rights and sovereignty. After the Gaza war broke out, President Miguel Diaz-Canel led a popular march of thousands of Cubans along central Malecon Street to express their support for the Palestinian cause and condemn the crimes of the Israeli occupation.
In late November, following the Israeli order to shut down Al Mayadeen's presence in occupied Palestine, Cuba expressed solidarity with the network and its global mission of upholding truth, with Cuba's Ambassador to Lebanon, Jorge Leon Cruz stating, "Once again, the American and Israeli regimes prove their fear of the defenders of truth and seek to silence them."
For years, Algeria has been striving to garner international support for Palestine to obtain permanent membership in the United Nations.
During the Arab League Summit on November 1st and 2nd, 2022, Algeria managed to redirect the discourse and focus on the Palestinian issue despite a wave of normalization by some of its members with "Israel".
